Press release: An action-packed activity day for 5s to 13s group
On 30th August, a group of 12 children, who are engaging with Friends of the Family’s 5s to 13s Befriending Service, experienced a day of thrills and spills at Calshot Activity Centre.
The day was generously funded by the Winchester Rotary and, with the support of volunteers and staff, the children overcame their fears to try a range of new and challenging activities designed to build confidence and improve self-esteem.
In the morning, the group competed in physical challenges on the low climbing walls and had fun speeding down the ski-slope on the Ringos. Following lunch, children and volunteers put on harnesses and helmets to take part in the afternoon activity. Attached in twos to a giant swing, participants were winched up to 40 feet in the air before the swing was released to the sound of screaming and applause.
Sam Hunt, 5s to 13s Befriending Manager said: “I was so impressed to see the children’s confidence grow over the day as they were pushed out of their comfort zone to try new thrilling activities. Thank you to Winchester Rotary and the Saint Vincent de Paul Society for providing both financial and practical support to enable us to facilitate the day. Our thanks also goes to our wonderful volunteers who proved to be great role models and made the day possible. It was a brilliant day.”
The 5s to 13s Befriending Project was set up in 2009 after receiving a Big Lottery Grant and works to support children and families across the Winchester district who are in need of support and friendship.
