Meet and Greet at Walnut Tree Farm!

In 5 to 13 year olds, News and events

On Wednesday 23rd July, Walnut Tree Farm opened its gates to our 5s to 13s Befriending children and volunteers for a meet and greet the animals workshop which was facilitated by the farm’s owner, Paula Baker.

The children and adults were able to get close up and personal to a wide range of rescued farm animals including Ferdinand the turkey, Wallis the goat, Mischief the pony and Daisy the alpaca and of course copious amount of free roaming chickens!

On the guided tour of the small holding, the children were given a ‘who’s who’ photo sheet of the different animals that they might see. As they found and ticked them off Paula shared how she had come to rescue each of them and also gave us some background information about how to she looks after them all. The children then had the opportunity to gently hold some small chicks and some big hens which they all said was really relaxing!

Paula then got the children to work, asking them to hand feed the very hungry goats and to collect the eggs from the chicken and duck houses. On this ‘egg-spedition’ the children found a grand total of 25 hen, duck and Guinea fowl eggs! Paula very kindly allowed the children to choose four eggs each that they could take home to try for their tea!

Sam Hunt said ‘This was a wonderful opportunity for our children to see, feed and handle real farm animals close up! It was lovely to see the children’s confidence and interest in the animals increase as the session progressed. We hope that we can come back and help Paula with the animals again in the Autumn!”
