Mums and Young Children’s Group

As our founding project in 1993, Mums and Young Children is the bedrock of Friends of the Family, providing a calm and nurturing environment where mums receive therapeutic group support to help them with their challenges. This is a unique opportunity for mums to access group support, counselling and the companionship of other mums whilst their children are looked after by a team of play volunteers. Some of our mums recently met with us to chat about their journey and how far they have come in their time with us, and you can read Karla’s story below.

“I had a rocky mental health patch when I was pregnant with my 3rd child. The health visitor suggested that group to me and at first I said – ‘No way, I’m not going to some cliquey group. I had a real fear of judgement and great anxiety. When I got here the first session was very awkward. But the second time I came I thought – I’m never leaving’.

The Mum’s garden room literally saved my life. I genuinely believe I’d kill myself before I started coming here. It’s time for me. I can try to get me back.

I’ve never left my children with anyone, but I’d happily leave them with the helpers when I’m here knowing I don’t have to worry about them.

I have Colette as a one-to-one counsellor, I wouldn’t be here without her. Doesn’t judge. Laughs in the right places and has made me a different sort of Mum. She’s given me the oomph to keep going. The support between the group is also important – we give each other a soft landing. I’ve grown as a person. I know I’ve got my demons. But I’m in control“.

We are currently in the unusual position where we have availability for new mums to join the group, so please do spread the word. Alternatively, if you have time to play, we are always on the look out to expand our team of volunteers. If you would like to volunteer as a play volunteer or are able to refer us to new mums, then please contactus@fotfwinchester.org.
